An array of solar cells connected to each other is called solar panel. This panel is exposed to sunlight in order to heat water or some other application. A number of photovoltaic cells connected to each other to make an array. This array is then mounted on the roof top to absorb the sun’ light and convert it into electricity. 1. Homemade solar panels
The panels which are developed at home by watching videos on YouTube still works, but they are not recommended to attach it to the roof. This is because it can cause various problems such as overheating. These solar panels should be kept at ground level in order to inspect if there exists any complications.
2. Size of Solar cell
Many types of solar cells exist in the market. The largest size of solar cell is 6X6 inch short tabbed cells. The material of the solar cell can be Poly, Multi and Mono crystalline. Depending on the requirement and budget select the size and material of the solar panel. Larger the solar cell greater is the voltage rating of it.
3. Connecting the solar cells
Now after selecting the size and material of the solar cell, it’s time to connect them to each other. The solar cells are connected to each other in series. The front side of the solar cell consists of negative wires while the back side consists of the positive wires. The positive is connected to negative wires using soldering iron and flux. Now all the solar panels get connected to each other. Now a string of wire is obtained at the end of the solar cell. These strings are made longer using tabbed wires of around ½ inch. Now to make secure the soldering connections, apply plastic tapes over it.
After this check the voltages using multimeter.
4. Bus connection
Now after this, bus connection is done using bus wire. This connect all the solar cells to each other.
5. Framing and securing the panel
After connecting the solar cells using bus wires, now frame the solar cells. This framing helps to prevent any damage to the panels. Then Plexiglas is applied on the panel to pressurize the solar cells. The glass is soldered carefully to prevent crack on it.
6. Connection to inverter and Junction box.
Now the wires which were taken outside are now connected to the inverter. This inverter converts the DC power into AC power. Also the connection is made to the junction box which is at the back of the panel. This junction box consists of blocking diodes which prevent the back flow of current. This can also be done by the charge controller. But if sometime, the charge controller does not provide this feature then junction box is used.
Now it is ready to use the solar panel.
